If you want to install artificial turf on your own, you must prepare the soil correctly to avoid future wrinkles or drainage issues. Below is a step-by-step DIY guide.
Excavate your existing lawn and soil to a depth of 3 inches. Clear out roots, organic weeds, and rocks. Treat the soil with a light application of weed killer.
Fill the excavated area with class II road base or decomposed granite. Mist with water, then use a vibrating plate compactor to pack the aggregates to a 95% density level. Level to support drainage.
Lay non-woven geotextile weed fabric sheets over the compacted base. Overlap the edges by 4 inches and secure using landscape staples to prevent weed intrusion.
Roll out the turf, making sure the grass blades face the primary viewing angle (towards the house). Cut the edges to fit your borders. Secure seams using high-strength seaming tape and adhesive.
Drive non-corrosive landscape nails around the perimeter (every 6 inches) to secure the turf edges. Spread washed silica infill sand across the turf, then use a power broom to brush the infill deep into the turf fibers, keeping them standing upright.
